Adventure Travel Bolivia La Paz, The PEACE! March 12, 2003 - La Paz, Bolivia   THERE WERE RIOTS IN THE STREETS here only a few weeks ago. Forty people were killed. A government building was torched just across the street from where I am writing this. The President had to be sneaked out of his palace in an ambulance. All of this over a tax hike!   The demonstration of the will of the people was effective. The tax hike was cancelled. Except for the loss of lives, I wish the American anti-war movement could be so effective. As I write this, the Bush war machine marches steadily forward. Are there really so many American people that support the slaughter of innocent Iraqi citizens as Saddam is safely squirreled away in an underground bunker? There has got to be a better way!
