A

Well, almost.
It's the closest thing we got. An hour south of the border,
the northern tip of the Gulf of California. Almost a resort.
Not quite world class. A resort that can only attract Arizonans.
Sort of an extended border town with all of the hustling
and sleaze that comes with being 'just over the border'.
Sure, we'd rather be in San Diego or Mazatlan, but for a
quick weekend, Puerto Penasco is our place!

My
sister Patty (who you might remember from the jungle
in Bolivia- link)
and her friends had a trip planned and I managed to
tag along at the last minute. It turned out to be
quite the festive weekend with a rock concert at the
beach and the finals of the world series. |

It
was a great opportunity for me to wander about with
my camera without much of an agenda. I did some research
for my new novel (synopsis online soon!) which will
have a number of nautical scenes in it.
Besides the tourism from north of the border, Puerto
Penasco (Rocky Point to the Gringos) has a sizable
fishing fleet. They bring in boatloads of jumbo shrimp,
part of the attraction for the tourists: cheap fresh
seafood! |

Crossing
the border was a breeze, couldn't have been easier unless
they made it downhill both ways! No visas, no passports,
NO PAPERWORK AT ALL! Not much more than a nod and a wave
each way. If only all my border crossings could be such
a pleasure! |
