FESTIVAL DE LOS PATRONALES
March 24 , 2000 - Nicaragua

At El Castillo we met a pair of Nicas (Nicaraguan women) from the little cowboy town of San Miguelito. We caught the same boat up the river and they invited us to their hometown for their annual festival. The four day event revolved around the unique combination rodeo/bullfight that occurred every afternoon.
Niether the town nor the event is listed in any guidebooks and we were most certainly the only tourists in attendance. Their local tradition involves cowboys getting drunk and cheating death in their own special way; taunting a 2000 lb. horned animal that is already really pissed. It starts out like a rodeo with a rider coming out of a chute. After the rider is thrown, it's open season! Anyone and everyone who wants to, can jump from the stands into the ring! A small gang teases the bull until someone gets tossed, gored, and/or trampled. Now that's entertainment!

After dark, the rum and beer continue to flow during the carnival/casino/disco portion of the festival. That continues until 3 am. People genuinely welcomed us into the party with drinks and plenty of questions about what we thought of their town. I told them that they know how to throw a party!!
