Spending lots of time online... |

I have
been in this tiny town (see
map, previous entry) for 12 days, unsuccessfully attempting
to remedy expired paperwork for Baby Blue. There is not
much to do here nor am I free to make any plans since
I must attend to my paperwork each day. Here is what a
typical day is like on the bureaucratic battlefront:
8:30 Appt. with lawyer
9:05 Lawyer actually shows up
9:15 Lawyer attempts to call customs office at
Northern border using calling card. Calls don't go through.
9:30 We walk to pay phone at corner market with
pocket full of coins. Connection made with appropriate
party. They have received my the electronic documents
from the Southern border office but are unable to open
them. "Can we resend via fax?"
9:40 Southern office agrees to locate documents
and fax them.
3:00 Appt. with lawyer.
3:40 Lawyer actually shows up
3:50 Northern office says no fax received. "Please
have them refaxed."
..and
on
...and on
and on. |

My
only friend in Tacna! |
When the northern office finally received the documents,
the matter was referred to the superintendent, who referred
the matter to a lawyer to render an opinion on the case.
(the CASE!?! Gimme a break, it's an expired permit for
a car!)
Soon it should reach the Peruvian Supreme Court!
The next day was the government lawyer's birthday so he
wouldn't be in the office...another day shot.
"It's almost Christmas so the opinion won't be rendered
until after the holiday."
My lawyer decides
(and I couldn't agree more) that it's time to take matters
into our own hands.
On to plan B.
We head for the border with cash in hand. We get there
and I can't believe my eyes! With $100 of my cash in his
front pocket, he couldn't bribe my way across!
On to plan C.
I grab all of my valuables, put Baby Blue in a garage,
grab a taxi across the border to catch my flight home
for Christmas.
Feliz Navidad!
